Sleep Remedy For Shift Work Sleep Disorder

Shift work sleep disorder is a growing problem, with the economy having gone global and never really shutting down. More and more, people are required to work shifts in which they have to be up at night in North America, while dealing with people during their work day on the other side of the world. The theory is that these shift workers should be able to get their sleep during the day, but it doesn't always work that way. So they end up with insomnia, and go on the prowl for a good sleep remedy.

When the body's natural circadian rhythms are thrown off kilter, it no longer knows when it's supposed to sleep; often meaning it just can't do so. Finding a sleep remedy becomes more and more urgent the longer this state of affairs goes on. The body wants to sleep when it's dark, so if the person can't find a very dark room to sleep in during the day, then their sleep is quite light if they manage to sleep at all. A sleeplessness cure becomes crucial, to prevent total exhaustion.

For this reason, people might try natural sleep remedies, such as chamomile or lemon grass tea, just as soon as they get home. They can help themselves by coming home as quickly as they can when their shift ends, to make their exposure to the morning light as short as possible. They might also try natural remedies like meditating for a few minutes just before going to bed, or having a warm bath. Doing regular exercise during the night, along with eating three regular meals during working hours can also contribute because these things help keep the person on a healthy schedule. Bad eating habits exacerbate insomnia, and night shift workers are notorious for not eating properly.

It does make some difference if a person on night shift stays on that shift and doesn't swing back and forth, between working days sometimes and working nights at other times. But even then, their sleep can still be disturbed, resulting in the need for a sleep remedy. If they can manage to take as many natural, healthy steps as possible to keep their lives regulated, then they may be able to help themselves with home remedies and meditation, and potentially reduce their instances of insomnia.

The Best Sleep Home Remedies May Be Natural
You might cure sleeplessness with a regular schedule of sleep time and meals, as well as keeping the bed only for sleep. Do things in the evening that will slow your mind down rather than rev it up, which would probably preclude really vigorous exercise. And try not to ingest foods or drinks that will have an affect upon your sleep patterns.

Try Herbal Sleep Remedies First
If you are in the middle of a long bout of insomnia, then you might automatically think of trying to find an insomnia medication, referring of course to sleeping pills, whether over the counter or prescribed. But it's actually better if you can try some sort of herbal sleep remedies first. Drugs can cause disruptions in the natural rhythms of sleep, and with such medications there is always the worry of side effects and even dependency.

Sleep Remedies: The Options
You need to remain in consultation with your doctor on an ongoing basis if you're using drugs as sleep remedies. Even when they work, you must be on the alert for side effects and even possible dependency. These medications may help cure sleeplessness, but it's not recommended that you stay on them for very long.
