Sleep Remedies: The Options

You may have tried all sorts of non-drug sleep remedies, like drinking recommended herbal teas, taking warm baths, exercising or establishing a regular nightly routine, and yet perhaps they're not working. It's understandable that you might be getting pretty desperate if the sleeplessness has gone on for awhile, and perhaps you're now starting to think of looking into sleeping medications. You can definitely buy over-the-counter meds at a drug store, yet it's still advisable to talk to a doctor before you do. And you should also inform yourself of what the various prescription drugs might do that's not really advertised.

A cold medication can often have the side benefit of functioning as a sleeping medication, because it will frequently produce drowsiness while it helps a person's cold. But many such medications contain antihistamines, which disturb sleep quality, and they can make you too drowsy during the daytime. Some antidepressants also function as sleep remedies, but they should be used sparingly because of their potential side effects and dependency issues. None of these medications should be used for more than a few days.

Other prescription medications have been designed as explicit sleep remedies, and include drugs like Lunesta, Rozerem, Sonata, or Ambien. But remember that these can have side effects or occasionally produce severe allergic reactions. You might even experience odd sleepwalking behavior. If you are an older person, then all of these side effects can be worsened, so any one of these drugs might not be the best sleeplessness cure for you. This is unfortunate, since aging is a factor in the development of sleeplessness, as the body produces less melatonin. But you might consider melatonin supplements before you try drugs.

You need to remain in consultation with your doctor on an ongoing basis if you're using drugs as sleep remedies. Even when they work, you must be on the alert for side effects and even possible dependency. These medications may help cure sleeplessness, but it's not recommended that you stay on them for very long. You should also be sure that there is no other physical cause of the sleeplessness, because you could be ignoring that and treating the wrong thing. Keep a close watch as you explore all the possibilities.

Melatonin As A Sleep Aid
While melatonin doesn't automatically work as sleep remedy, that doesn't mean it automatically fails either. For some disorders it works better than for others. One of the reasons is that some disruptions of sleeping patterns actually stem from other conditions, which melatonin can't really touch. So it might give some aid, even in these cases, but it can't touch the underlying cause. Still, it's always useful to talk to a physician in case he or she thinks it's worth a shot to use melatonin as a sleep aid.

Try Herbal Sleep Remedies First
If you are in the middle of a long bout of insomnia, then you might automatically think of trying to find an insomnia medication, referring of course to sleeping pills, whether over the counter or prescribed. But it's actually better if you can try some sort of herbal sleep remedies first. Drugs can cause disruptions in the natural rhythms of sleep, and with such medications there is always the worry of side effects and even dependency.

The Best Sleep Home Remedies May Be Natural
You might cure sleeplessness with a regular schedule of sleep time and meals, as well as keeping the bed only for sleep. Do things in the evening that will slow your mind down rather than rev it up, which would probably preclude really vigorous exercise. And try not to ingest foods or drinks that will have an affect upon your sleep patterns.
